Samsung's M-series of budget-friendly phones has a new model called the Galaxy M36. It aims to offer a good blend of style, performance, and basic functionality. But how does the Samsung Galaxy M36 stack up against other devices in its pricing range in a market that is quite competitive? Let's take a detailed look at the phone's design, performance, and overall value to understand whether it lives up to expectations.
The Galaxy M36 from Samsung has a sleek appearance that makes it look high-end right away. You may get the phone in three colours: Velvet Black, Orange Haze, and Serene Green. The design has a two-tone finish and a matte silver polycarbonate frame that makes it look classy. The 6.7-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED screen features a refresh rate of 120Hz, which makes it perfect for watching films and moving about smoothly.
The Galaxy M36 looks modern, but it is weighty at 197g. The overall appearance might make it look like a high-end tablet, but the plastic back panel tends to become dirty easily, which could turn some people off. The phone also features a waterdrop notch, which is less effective than the hole-punch style used in older versions, such as the Galaxy M35.
The M36's display is vibrant, thanks to its Super AMOLED panel. With 1,000 nits of peak brightness, it ensures that the screen remains legible even under direct sunlight. However, the transition to the waterdrop notch instead of the more modern hole-punch design takes away some of the design appeal.
The M36 sports a 5nm Exynos 1380 CPU, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. You may add more storage with a microSD card. It appears capable of handling everyday duties without issues, but in practical use, it may not perform as expected. The Exynos 1380 chipset can handle basic tasks like browsing and social media, but struggles with more demanding apps and multitasking. Even with AI capabilities like Gemini Live and Translate, the phone still seems slow when it's busy.
The gaming performance is decent, with the Galaxy M36 running titles like Asphalt Legends at medium settings, but it might not be suitable for intense, high-end gaming. The 5000mAh battery is a big plus here, allowing for extended usage. The phone also features 44W fast charging, though it falls behind in terms of charging speed compared to some of its competitors.
The Samsung Galaxy M36 contains three cameras: a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS), a 5MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP macro camera. The camera performs adequately for the budget, although it struggles with fine details and can make backgrounds overly bright.
In low-light conditions, the 50MP camera performs modestly, keeping noise under control but sacrificing sharpness and detail. The 13MP front camera does a decent job for selfies, but lacks the clarity and detail found in more expensive phones.
While the phone is capable of 4K video recording, the macro camera leaves much to be desired, with blurry and low-quality images.
The Samsung Galaxy M36 boasts a 5000mAh battery that lasts all day, even with heavy use. It's 44W fast charging allows for quick charging, so you won't have to stay plugged in for too long.
However, in real-world testing, the battery life didn't live up to the standard set by its predecessor, the Galaxy M35. During our tests, the M36 lasted around 17 hours during continuous video playback, which is far less than the 47 hours of the M35.
The phone takes about 1 hour and 28 minutes to fully charge, which is acceptable but not as fast as some of its competitors.
The Samsung Galaxy M36 delivers a decent overall experience, but it's hard to recommend for users who prioritize performance and camera quality. With a 50MP primary camera, 5000mAh battery, and a 5nm processor, the phone offers a solid set of features till it faces stiff competition from Realme, iQOO, and Xiaomi, which offer better value for the price.
However, if long-term software support is crucial for you, the Galaxy M36 might be a good choice. Samsung promises six years of OS and security updates, which is an attractive offer in the budget smartphone category.
